''Scolecenchelys japonica'' is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).〔(''Scolecenchelys japonica'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Yoshihiko Machida and Suguru Ohta in 1993, originally under the genus ''Muraenichthys''.〔Machida, Y. and S. Ohta, 1993 (15 Nov.) (21006 ) ''Muraenichthys japonicus, a new worm eel from the Sea of Japan (Ophichthyidae: Myrophinae).'' Japanese Journal of Ichthyology v. 40 (no. 3): 323-326.〕 It is a marine, temperate water-dwelling eel which is known from Mishima Island, Japan, (from which its species epithet is derived) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
